The aim of the course is to introduce students to the characteristics of audiovisual media and their use as educational tools for learning and teaching. The content of the course is structured in lectures and practical exercises. The presentations refer to issues of the history of the moving image, focusing on the last decades of the 20th century, where it emerges as a dominant means of expression and communication. It also focuses on the presentation of the representational possibilities of the image as a means of expression but also of perception of reality, in the commentary of experimental videos as means of self-observation, education and independent expression and, finally, in the presentation of models of design, production and educational use of the video.
The content of the presentations includes references to educational udio-visual material, such as broadcasts of the Greek educational television, educational videos of the Pedagogical Institute and the Institute of Educational Policy, films from educational institutions abroad but also examples from wider audiovisual material, such as documentaries, current affairs, excerpts from fiction films and television shows.
The practical exercises offer students the opportunity to practice designing and producing videos with a variety of topics and to cover different educational objectives and to present in a dynamic way different aspects of the taught subject, such as performing experiments, operating mechanisms, developing scientific and social issues, aspects of everyday life, portraits and interviews of artists and scientists, etc.
