Wireline and wireless networks consists a keyi nfrastructure for the implementation of information and communication technologies in education. “Data Networks and Tele-Education Services” module aims to introduce students to data network technology with an emphasis on networked educational services and applications.
In this context, the fundamental networking concepts, such as network devices, architectures, protocols and services are the key discussion topics of the module. In particular, typical wireline and wireless data network topologies (Local/Metropolitan/Wide Area Networks, LAN/MAN/WAN) as well as the OSI protocol architecture are presented and discussed. Emphasis is given on the Internet protocol architecture and the web based tele-education applications. Furthermore, there is an introduction on special topics that determine the trends of networking technology (e.g. wide band transmission technologies, applications and Quality of Service requirements, network security). The end-user interfaces with the networks as well as the end-user devices is also an important topic with an emphasis given on the installation of Web Servers and their use as a platform for the implementation of web based applications/services.
